Alexandre Perez released his debut album 1984 through Shogun Audio in 2009 and was immediately marked as one of the most musically sophisticated producers of his generation, working in a soulful, song driven strand of drum and bass with real emotional weight. Rather than settling there, he moved outward. In 2015 he founded 1985 Music, a label that became one of the key homes for halftime and the more experimental, bass led territory adjacent to drum and bass, developing an aesthetic that pulled in hip hop, dubstep and sound design driven electronic music. His Shades project with Eprom pushed further still. His influence on the halftime sound is difficult to overstate, and 1985 Music has become a reference point for producers working outside the genre's tempo orthodoxy. Alix Perez is one of the artists constantly redrawing where drum and bass ends.
