Black Sun Empire formed in Utrecht and have been a defining force in dark, technical drum and bass since the early 2000s. Brothers René and Micha Verdult alongside Milan Heyboer built a sound around cold, metallic bass design and relentless, machine like drums that helped establish the template for neurofunk. Albums including Driving Insane, Endless and Lights and Wires charted the development of that sound, and their labels, Blackout Music and their own imprint, became essential platforms for the darker end of the genre across Europe. Their output has been remarkably consistent across two decades. They remain one of the most reliably heavy live acts in drum and bass, and the Blackout brand runs events across the continent. Black Sun Empire are foundational to everything that happens at the dark, technical end of the music.
