Michael West has been a foundational presence in UK dance music since the late 1980s, first as Rebel MC, who scored genuine chart hits before turning fully toward the emerging jungle sound. As Congo Natty he became the keeper of ragga jungle, the strand that fused Jamaican sound system culture directly into breakbeat. His Congo Natty label released a stream of records through the 1990s that defined the sound, and his 2013 album Jungle Revolution brought it to a new audience with a clarity of purpose that few revival records manage. The music has always carried an explicitly spiritual and political charge alongside the bass weight. Congo Natty performs with a full live crew, and the shows function as much as a celebration of sound system heritage as a drum and bass set. He is one of the genuine originators, and jungle would sound very different without him.
