Ben Settle was one of the architects of techstep, the darker, more mechanical strand of drum and bass that emerged in the mid 1990s and pulled the genre away from its jungle roots. His early solo work on labels including No U-Turn established a sound built on distorted, industrial bass and an atmosphere of genuine menace. His partnership with Optical produced Wormhole in 1998, an album that hit the scene like a bomb and effectively wrote the blueprint for neurofunk. Together they founded Virus Recordings, which became the definitive home for the darker, more technical end of the music and remains an institution. Ed Rush and Optical have toured as a duo for over two decades, and the sets remain uncompromising. Almost every producer working in dark or technical drum and bass today is building on foundations these two laid.
