High Contrast
Genres: Drum & Bass, Liquid
Lincoln Barrett emerged from Cardiff in the early 2000s and immediately changed what liquid drum and bass could sound like. True Colours and High Society established a producer who worked with soul and disco samples the way a hip hop producer would, building tracks around emotional peaks rather than around drops. His reach has extended well beyond the genre. He produced music for the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, and his remix work, including a widely celebrated reworking of Adele's "Hometown Glory", brought his sound to audiences with no prior connection to drum and bass. Later albums including The Agony & The Ecstasy and Night Gallery moved into darker and more experimental territory. A long standing Hospital Records artist, High Contrast is one of a small handful of producers whose records genuinely defined a subgenre. Liquid drum and bass as most people understand it starts here.
