Ivy Lab began as a trio and now operate as a duo, and across both incarnations they have been among the most restlessly experimental acts working around drum and bass. Their early material sat in a soulful, half time influenced space, and they have since moved almost entirely into a slower, heavier, more abstract sound of their own making. Their 20/20 LDN label has become a platform for that territory, releasing music that borrows from trap, hip hop and instrumental beat culture while retaining the sound design obsession of drum and bass production. It is a body of work that has influenced a generation of producers who came up inside the genre and wanted out of its tempo. Live, their sets are unlike almost anything else on a drum and bass bill, built around groove and space rather than energy. Ivy Lab are the clearest example of what happens when producers from this scene follow their instincts wherever they lead.
