Few DJs stood closer to the birth of jungle than Nicky Blackmarket. Born Nicholas Andersson-Gylden, he was playing electro at London youth clubs by the age of 14, then worked his way through house parties and pirate radio on Pulse, Eruption and Kool FM. At Blackmarket Records in Soho he opened a downstairs breakbeat department in the early 1990s, and it became the counter where DJs such as Fabio and Grooverider had records held back for them as hardcore turned into drum and bass. During the jungle boom he formed a celebrated DJ and MC partnership with the late Stevie Hyper D. Production has always come second to the decks, but he released the Spam EP as Nick OD, ran the Gyroscope label and still runs Kartoons. Three decades of dubplates and shop stock inform his sets, which pull from ragga jungle, rollers and the classics he once sold over the counter, and he remains a regular on jungle and heritage line-ups across the UK.
