Matt Quinn came to drum and bass with an engineer's training and a musician's background, and it showed immediately. His production carried a clarity and a low end weight that set it apart, and his early work included studio contributions to Goldie's material as well as his own releases. His partnership with Ed Rush changed the genre. Wormhole, released in 1998, took techstep's darkness and added a funk and a precision that nobody had managed before, and the record is routinely cited as the point where neurofunk began. The pair founded Virus Recordings to house the sound, and it became one of drum and bass's most important labels. He is the brother of Jamie Quinn, better known as Matrix, and between them the family has shaped a remarkable amount of the genre's technical development. Optical remains a byword for production quality in drum and bass.
