Nick Douwma began releasing as Sub Focus in the mid 2000s and quickly became one of the most melodically gifted producers in drum and bass. His self titled debut album on RAM Records in 2009 gathered together "Timewarp", "Rock It" and "Could This Be Real", a run of tracks that showed the genre could carry huge hooks without losing any of its weight. Torus followed in 2013, pushing further toward song structure with "Endorphins" and "Turn Back Time", while his live show became one of the most technically ambitious in electronic music, built around a custom rig that let him play the material rather than simply mix it. His production is characterised by an unusual clarity, with basslines that are enormous but never muddy. In 2020 he joined forces with longtime friend and RAM labelmate Wilkinson for Portals, a full collaborative album that toured as a joint live show. Sub Focus remains one of the very few artists in the genre equally at home headlining a festival main stage and soundtracking a dark room at four in the morning.
