High Contrast is a Cardiff product, and his 2007 album launch at Clwb Ifor Bach on Womanby Street, part of Dave Shaw's Aperture series, drew a crowd big enough to shake the floorboards and bring police vans to the door. Shaw went on to found Concrete Junglists, the drum and bass streetwear and events brand, while Incurzion Audio, run by Zak King and Obsidian, and Mascot's Riddim Records give the Welsh capital its own labels. Pirate station Bass FM and long gone clubs such as the Hippo Club laid the early groundwork. MC XL, a familiar voice on Critical Music bills, hosts his XL Invites nights at Six Feet Under, a basement on St Mary Street. District on Greyfriars Road is the main dedicated electronic club, booking D&B headliners alongside house and techno, and Tramshed, a Grade II listed former tram depot in Grangetown holding around 1,000, takes larger touring shows. Bedlam's big raves visit the city too. District sits only a few hundred yards from Womanby Street, so the central venues are easy to walk between.
