Leicester was there at the start. DJ SS, born in the city in 1970, began as a hip hop and rare groove DJ, then with his partner Eidris ran Total Kaos parties every Friday in the early hardcore years and put on one of the first large indoor raves, at Donington Park in the summer of 1991. Their Leicester label Formation was prolific through breakbeat hardcore and jungle from 1991, scored its biggest record with The Lighter in 1995, and later released early work by John B and Twisted Individual. 2Funky, which Vijay Mistry started as a record shop in the late 1990s, is now a complex on New Park Street with a main room of around 350; it specialises in music of Black origin and hosts jungle, hardcore and drum and bass promoters alongside its own annual festival. The 440 Venue on Friday Street uses a former brewery factory floor for dubstep, bass and jungle, with promoters bringing in rigs such as Heavy Red. Doppler Studio is a 100 capacity room on the third floor of a High Street building where jungle nights share the calendar with house and techno.
