Newport built its music reputation on guitars rather than breakbeats. TJ's on Clarence Place, opened in 1985 and closed in 2010, was the city's famous rock venue, and Le Pub kept that grassroots tradition going. Club listings today centre on Fire and Ice on Cambrian Road, a large open plan venue made from three joined retail units, with several bars across two levels and a separate tiki room. Its most regular promoter is DELTA, whose UV parties are hard dance and hardstyle, so true drum and bass dates in Newport are occasional and the bass on offer is mostly at the harder, faster end. Garage and R&B nights turn up at smaller bars such as Bar Lounge Boujee.
