The building on Westgate Road has been a 1927 cinema, the Majestic Ballroom where the Beatles played in 1963, a bingo hall and, from 2005, the O2 Academy. Electric Group, which also runs Electric Brixton, took it over and reopened it as NX Newcastle in September 2022 after a refurbishment that added mezzanine platforms, new bars and a roof terrace. The main room holds around 2,000 for club nights, and its balconies give people somewhere to step out of the crush. Most of the club calendar runs to house and techno headliners, but Big Fat Rave has filled it with jungle, garage and drum and bass, bringing in visiting rigs such as Raze and Electrikal Soundsystem. Newcastle Central Station is a short walk away, and gig-goers repeatedly mention steep bar prices.
