Phonox
418 Brixton Road, London, SW9 7AY
When Plan B closed in June 2015, The Columbo Group reopened the Brixton Road site that September as Phonox, a deliberately stripped-back club with one dance floor, no VIP tiers and a policy built on long resident sets. Capacity is usually given as about 450. DJ Mag listed it in its Top 100 Clubs in 2019, and Brixton tube is a few minutes on foot. House and techno lead, but the bass side is strong. Thursday's Insomnia London session mixes house, techno and jungle, and weekend bookings have brought Pinch, Neffa-T and the FMS six-deck format. Reviewers rate the sound highly and describe security as solid and the crowd as mixed and respectful. The complaints are just as consistent: sold-out nights get very packed, which makes the floor uncomfortable away from the sweet spot, and the cloakroom queue at the end can be long, so travel light. Watch for a shin-height step between the dancefloor and the bar.
Phonox has 11 upcoming drum & bass event(s) on DNBRAVE.
