The Volks Nightclub

Set into the Madeira Drive arches across the road from the beach, The Volks borrows its name from the Volk's Electric Railway that rattles past outside. The building was the Chain Pier Bar and then the Volks Tavern before it became a club, and has traded as one for over thirty years: independent, artist run and unbothered by polish. There is a main floor at street level, a smaller club and bar downstairs, and a terrace and cafe for daytime. Jungle and drum and bass take up most of the calendar, with Supercharged, 160 Brighton, The Cost of Raving and Aftershock among the regular promoters and Degs bringing his Degs & Friends series back to a room where he was once resident MC. Psytrance, dubstep and hardcore fill the other nights. Regulars talk about the rig first, which sounds far bigger than a room this size has any right to, and the door and bar crews get unusually warm notices. Capacity is small, so headline bookings sell out. Brighton station is roughly a 20 minute walk.
